I'm not so sure, Zach. I'm not convinced that a company of Sun's size is necessarily 'doing too much,' so much as failing to maximise the opportunities to work ACROSS those strands of activity.

There's little sustainability in JUST writing open source and making it available for download, for example...

Do you think they're a little off-topic with some of their solutions, though?

"By omitting a compelling and enveloping professional services proposition, Sun damages its own ability to capitalise upon its software and hardware efforts."

Yes, but they make hardware, AND software, AND open-source web-solutions, AND... Do you think it might be time to sell parts of sun, and focus more on one aspect?

I wonder if Sun could actually do something a bit cooler. They could become an environment for innovation in BOTH hardware and Software—PARC-like—if they could create a less corporate, more organic Sun brand.

You're spot on with the professional services, I think. But maybe it could be a wider-appeal? Not just "professional services" but a broad, organic environment to bring together devs and chip-builders—without the need to become an "employee"—to build the best solutions for their own interests.
