Will, thanks for the insights. I look forward to seeing what Waterstones and others come up with... and just hope that this unanticipated demand doesn't lead them to think that incentives aren't required!

I would pay extra to have my e-book reader supplied without any Dan Brown books on it :-)

Hi Paul,

It's an interesting article you have here and I, hopefully, might be able to give some insight into why Waterstones are not yet up to speed with their ebook capability to offer you more incentives to buy ebook versions of books you have already purchased from them.

The plain fact of the matter is that they have been taken by surprise at just how popular ebooks are. They have sold far more than they expected and they are trying to catch up with their customers to a certain extent. This manifests itself in the fact that they are working on making what you write about above happen.

Their systems just aren't quite there yet to be able to offer exactly what you want but they soon will be.

Furthermore, they want to double the number of ebooks available from the current range within the next few months and publishers are all in the process of converting a ton of books into electronic format as we speak.

In the next few months, Waterstones and other retailers should have caught up with customer demand, I hope.

Thanks for an interesting post.
