Perhaps orthogonal to the industry's current angst around public, private and hybrid Clouds, Telford sees a valid and valuable role for 'industry clouds,' optimised to handle the particular workloads of a given vertical. The first of these rolled out today to the collaborative healthcare market, and we discuss some of the potential of this approach. If it can work in the highly regulated health sector, can the same ideas be deployed more easily - and cheaply - to other verticals?

Formed as a partnership between Microsoft and Accenture, Avanade focuses upon delivering IT solutions based upon Microsoft's suite of technologies and products, including Cloud offerings such as Azure and the company's Business Productivity Online Standard Suite (BPOS).

I discussed Azure in a podcast with Microsoft's Amitabh Srivastava last year, and in this latest conversation Scott and Bob share some of the experiences Avanade has gained in rolling out over 1.3 million BPOS seats to a wide range of enterprise clients.

This podcast was recorded on Wednesday 28 July, 2010.

During our conversation, we referred to the following resources;

	Amazon
	App Fabric
	Avanade

	Azure
	BPOS
	Hotmail

<itunes:summary>Continuing my series of podcast conversations with interesting people, this week I spoke with David Siegel in New York. David is the author of several best-selling books, and has just published Pull: the power of the Semantic Web to transform your business [Amazon US] [Amazon UK].

We discuss the premise behind the book, and delve into David's perspective that the 'semantic web' is far broader than many have traditionally thought.

During our conversation, we mention the following resources;

	Business Rules Markup Language (BRML)
	Creating Killer Web Sites
	eXtensible Markup Language (XML)
	Futurize Your Enterprise
GoodRelations, and my podcast with Martin Hepp and Jamie Taylor
	Kayak
	Linked Data
	NeuroCommons
	PubSubHubbub
	Pull
	Pull website
	Resource Discovery Framework (RDF)
	Science Commons
	Secrets of Successful Web Sites
	Universal Product Code (UPC)
	weather.com
	Web Ontology Language (OWL)
	Wolfram Alpha
	World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
XBRL, and my podcast with Diane Mueller

Our topic was <a href="http://purl.org/goodrelations/">GoodRelations</a>, an ontology/vocabulary designed to enhance the clarity of descriptions of businesses and their products on the Web. As the <a href="http://purl.org/goodrelations/">GoodRelations site</a> describes,</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;GoodRelations is <strong>a language</strong> that can be used <strong>to describe</strong> very precisely what<strong>your business</strong> is offering. Some people call GoodRelations a &#8216;data dictionary&#8217;, others prefer &#8216;schema&#8217; or &#8216;ontology&#8217;. But the name of the thing is not important. Important is that you can use GoodRelations to create a small data package that describes your <strong>products</strong>and their <strong>features</strong> and <strong>prices</strong>, your<strong>stores</strong> and opening hours, <strong>payment options</strong> and the like.</p>
<p>You simply paste this data package into your Web page using <a href="http://www.w3.org/TR/rdfa-syntax">W3C&#8217;s RDFa</a> format.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Martin and Jamie talk about the vocabulary itself, before moving on to the some of the ways in which it transforms commerce on the Web for early adopters such as Best Buy and O&#8217;Reilly.</p>

<blockquote><p>&#8220;change the way consumers discover and engage with content on the Web.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Via the site at evri.com, users are able to explore news-like topics of interest. Through partnerships with <em><a href="http://corporate.evri.com/2009/11/the-washington-post/">The Washington Post</a></em>, <a href="http://corporate.evri.com/2009/11/lmk/">Hearst</a> and others, Evri is also able to reach established audiences on those sites. An <a href="http://corporate.evri.com/developers/">API</a> enables developers to leverage Evri in their own applications, and the forthcoming version 2 of Evri promises further capabilities.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.evri.com/organization/apple-inc.-0x49399"><img class="size-full wp-image-907 aligncenter" title="Evri, looking at Apple" src="http://cloudofdata.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/evri-apple.png" alt="" width="466" height="461" /></a></p>
<p>As well as discussing Evri itself, we explore some of Will&#8217;s views on the changing role of semantic search, and the potential for this fledgling market to reach wider consumer awareness and adoption. Have a listen, and see what you think.</p>

<itunes:summary>I've been following InfoChimps for some time, intrigued by their aspiration to build a marketplace for data that combines the free with the paid. Thanks to the team at Jones-Dilworth (honestly, does Josh have any clients that aren't interesting?) I managed to get some time with founder Philip (Flip) Kromer and Joseph Kelly whilst over in the States for Defrag last month.

Earlier this week Flip and I got together on Skype to reprise some of the conversation as a podcast, which is now available.

Production of this podcast was supported by Talis.

My arrangement with Talis concludes with the release of this podcast, so if you want to keep listening to my content you will need to subscribe directly to my feed, either on this site or in iTunes. Talis podcasts continue without me, and you can find their various channels aggregated here.
